Alternative Anzac Day commemorations in Whanganui planned in lieu of RSA event
By Jacob McSweeny 9 Apr, 2022 05:00 AM...An alternative Anzac Day service has been planned after the Wanganui RSA decided to pull its event over Covid-19 safety concerns. But the Wanganui RSA president Rod Hart is warning its veterans not to confuse it with the official service.

An event has been touted on Whanganui community pages on social media with a poster saying attendees would march together from the Memorial Hall carpark to the Cenotaph at 6am on Monday, April 25.

Hart said he was concerned people would mistake the new event with his organisation's usual one. Hart said the RSA had up to 10,000 people attend services in previous years and he did not think the space around the War Memorial Centre could keep people safe from a potential Covid-19 super spreader event. Transgender people ‘denied chance to preserve fertility on the NHS’
Jane Kirby 11/04/2022..Some transgender people are being denied the chance to preserve their fertility on the NHS due to a postcode lottery, experts have said. A new study found patchy care for freezing eggs and sperm, while young girls undergoing cancer treatment – and women who cannot delay chemotherapy.

In 2019, following the threat of a judicial review by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), NHS England told regional clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) they must not discriminate against transgender people and must take heed of the Equality Act.

In guidance to CCGs, NHS England said that “in a significant number of cases an individual’s need for fertility preservation will arise because of the threat to fertility from cancer treatment” but other patient groups affected the same way include those receiving hormone treatment “or surgery for the alleviation of gender dysphoria”. Unhealthy homes leave students out in the cold
Dr Kimberley O’Sullivan 07/04/2022..The perennial idea that living in cold student flats is a rite of passage in New Zealand needs a long-overdue rethink. While housing energy efficiency standards for rental homes have improved, research from the University of Otago’s

He Kāinga Oranga Housing and Health Research Programme has found keeping warm at home remains a struggle for many students, with significant health and wellbeing impacts. We’re calling for universal financial support for students and continuing improvement in energy efficiency standards for student accommodation.

We found tertiary students in Aotearoa are more than twice as likely as the general population to be living in damp and mouldy homes - and Māori students and students with living with disability or long-term health conditions were even more likely to live in damp and mouldy housing. Robert Jobson 11/04/2022..The Queen said having Covid left her “very tired and exhausted”, as she spoke to a former patient and NHS staff about their experiences during the pandemic. The monarch, 95, who contracted the virus in February, also expressed her relief the Dunkirk spirit "still exists".

She was speaking on a video call to mark the official opening of the new Queen Elizabeth Unit at The Royal London Hospital, of which she is patron. It was built in a record five weeks to accommodate the surging numbers of Covid patients and is one of the biggest critical care units in the country.

During her video call with workers and medical staff, the Queen listened to their stories of coping with the huge influx of Covid patients, and was told by one senior nurse “we held their hands, we wiped their tears and we provided comfort. .Click here Evening standard

China's 'Twitter' appears to be censoring content about food shortages in Shanghai
wyip@insider.com (Waiyee Yip,Weilun Soon) 11/04/2022..As residents in the locked-down city of Shanghai struggle to obtain groceries, China's Twitter-like Weibo platform appears to have censored content linked to the city's food crisis.

Searches for the popular hashtag "buying groceries in Shanghai" have been blocked, with users receiving a message that "no results can be found" when they attempted to do so. It is unclear when the blocking of searches began, but a user's Weibo post about it last Friday was widely circulated, drawing more than 133,000 likes and 34,000 reposts.

Good news! The problem of 'buying groceries in Shanghai' has been completely solved," the user wrote, alongside a screenshot of a "no results" search page. Below, thousands of users left seemingly sarcastic comments concerning the Chinese government's "speed" and "efficiency" in dealing with problems.. Click here Insider

Chef Gareth Stewart says the price of food in supermarkets is out of control
As told to Sara Bunny 05:00, Apr 10 2022.....As executive chef at Nourish Group, Gareth Stewart creates menus for some of the country’s top eateries, including Soul at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour and Wellington’s Shed 5.

Stewart got his big kitchen break when he was just 18, at London’s prestigious Claridge’s Hotel, before going on to work at the Michelin-starred restaurant The Greenhouse in Mayfair. He moved to New Zealand in 2007.

How to relax. Being a chef, you tend to forget all about that need to stop once in a while and think about what’s really important. And the really important stuff is your health, family and friends. It’s also about being able to switch off, slow down and take some time for yourself. I’m just starting to learn how to do that now, but I wish I had done more of it a long time ago..Click here Stuff-news

Unmasked protesters enter Wellington supermarket but numbers small
Tom Hunt 14:55, Apr 10 2022 About a dozen protesters have marched through a central Wellington supermarket in a so-called "unmasked flash mob". Police greeted the protesters outside Chaffers New World at 1pm on Sunday but did not stop the group – of roughly 12 – entering the store and walking up and down the aisles.

One carried a young child, while others carried banners. None wore masks – in an apparent stance on the Government advice to limit the spread of Covid-19 by wearing face masks. One said she had an exemption from wearing a mask but said her doctor would have to reveal the reason for the exemption.

These things [disposable face masks] are ending up all over, all over the world,” she said. Disposable face masks are made from polypropylene. The rear of her placard was opposing using QR codes to scan in – a mandate that has now been ditched. click here stuff-news

Bowl of Brooklands capacity under review as council  changing iconic New Plymouth venue
Glenn McLean 11:17, Apr 08 2022 A plan to explore increasing the capacity at the iconic Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth has been backed by one of the country’s leading concert promoters, who says it could be a game changer for attracting major international acts to the region.

The New Plymouth District Council is investigating what could be done to increase the capacity at the Bowl from 15,000 to 20,000. The plan is amongst a raft of things the council is investigating, including building a permanent structure over the lake in front of the Bowl stage, increasing seating, improving the entrance and access routes to the venue,

Those options have been included in a lengthy questionnaire sent to members of the Friends of Pukekura Park. In 1967 a Kiri Te Kanawa concert there was attended by 15,000 people. New Plymouth locals still talk of The Seekers concert in 1968 that was attended by 17,500 people, a record that stood for more than 40 years. Click here stuff-news

Tips to save money on your wedding that won't ruin your big day
Kate Kachor 09/04/2022..Planning a wedding can be a stressful process and one, many can attest, that is costly. Whether you're dreaming of a church wedding with all the trimmings, a destination wedding with an intimate celebration, or a weekend away with a food truck as your caterer, there is one theme running through them all — it's your big day.

Yet, as more couples embrace their special day as one filled with celebration and fun rather than a wildly traditional event, there are significant cost savings to be made. So what does the average wedding cost in Australia? Comparison site Finder.com.au revealed the average cost of a wedding in Australia in 2022 is $35,000.

Each year, there are an estimated 120,00 weddings held in Australia, data from EasyWeddings found. However, due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the number of 'I Dos' fell to just 78,989 in 2020 and about 85,000 in 2021. Click here Honey

Wastewater pipe upgrade on Wellington's Taranaki St to cost $24m
11 Apr, 2022 03:30 PM By Georgina Campbell Senior Multimedia Journalist..The cost to upgrade a wastewater pump station and rising main on Wellington's Taranaki St will cost $18 million more than first thought.

The project is the largest upgrade to the capital's inner city wastewater infrastructure in more than 50 years. Without the work, there's a risk the wastewater network will not have sufficient capacity to support the forecast demand in Te Aro and constrain housing densification. The upgrade will also help to avoid overflows and spills into the harbour.

Last year the project was estimated to cost $6.1 million, but following detailed design it's now expected to cost $24.1 million. The revised cost estimate has been outlined in an upcoming Wellington City Council committee meeting agenda. Click here NZ-herald

Peter Biggs on priesthood, Covid-19 and the NZ Symphony Orchestra
André Chumko 05:00, Apr 09 2022 Down a gravel driveway straight out of a Japanese animation film, off a road 10 minutes into the countryside from the Wairarapa town of Featherston, and nestled beneath the Remutaka Range, Peter Biggs stands ready in his apron.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s chief executive, known as Biggsy, walks out into the misty, damp air to welcome us to his and wife Mary’s farm estate, Te Puhi. Built in 1868, the house and manicured garden evoke scenes from a frozen-in-time children’s fairytale, and America’s midwest, with sweeping porches,

The estate boasts several hundred-year-old trees, including a red-barked miro.
Since 1997 Peter and Mary have been tending these grounds with help from their farmhand Sydney. Click here stuff-news

High-rises surround home after owner refused to sell to developers
9 Apr, 2022 11:40 AM A lone single-storey house sits wedged between towering new high-rises in Sydney, after the owner refused to give up their property. Like a scene straight out of the Disney-Pixar film Up, the three-bedroom brick rental in Rhodes has stayed put despite developers' interest.

It means the home – leased for A$900 ($978) a week – is now surrounded by huge residential towers and a shopping and dining precinct as part of Rhodes Central. On the other side of the road is a train station.

The first stage of a A$2.5 billion town centre opened its doors last year. According to Architecture & Design, developers Billbergia started buying parcels of land for the project in the 1990s. But a man who manages a nearby building claimed the owner of the house, an elderly woman, wanted far more for the property than developers were willing to pay. click here Nz-herald news
