Wynter Gordon, dance diva turned indie pop queen turned folk group lead singer, returns with a new solo effort, her first since 2013. "Bleeding Out" follows the release of the beautiful "Everything Burns", Gordon's debut effort with side project The Righteous Young, which seems to have disappeared after their initial release.
"Bleeding Out", the first taste of Gordon's upcoming Five Needle EP, does not follow in the footsteps of her dance hits, "Dirty Talk" and "Til Death", but closely resembles the work she put forth on her Human Condition EPs. The gloomy new single, reminiscent of a Lana Del Rey effort, details the artist's journey through loss and love as Gordon's heartfelt, chilling vocals are thrust in the spotlight.
Production is kept at a minimal stage, allowing the vocal performance to truly get the message behind the somber songwriting across to the listener. "You got a hold of my heart now, you took a piece and you cut it out, you crawled up under my skin, under my skin, I'm bleeding out," Gordon sings on the tragic chorus. This is the furthest one could get from the typical, top-down, joyful, lovey-dovey pop track we are used to hearing so close to summer. But it's killer!
Once you stop wiping the tears from your eyes, understand the fragile nature of the slightly pop-leaning, piano-supported ballad. "Bleeding Out" may not be the type of single to dominate the charts, unless your Adele, but it definitely showcases a brilliant sense of musicianship we don't really see these days. Gordon is an artist, with a tremendous voice, and her decision to come back with a mid-tempo offering is appreciated.
Yes, the times of With The Music I Die are desperately missed, but if "Bleeding Out" is any indication of the sound of Gordon's new EP, then we are in for an emotional ride. She has never been a household name, even though she's worked with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige and Ciara, but it would be criminal if Gordon's latest release was overlooked.
UPDATE (06/02/2015): Finally. After returning in solo form with the power ballad "Bleeding Out" last month, Wynter Gordon has premiered the officially accompanying music video for the heartbreaking single. After Gordon is seen in an empty, white room, allowing blue roses petals to hit the floor, the artist is then transported to a darker environment to wallow in her heartbreak.
Overall, the concept of the newly released visual is kept simple. There's not a lot of chaos going on in the background, no choreographed dance routine, not even anyone else playing her love interest. This allows Gordon's delicate but powerful performance shine even brighter. The artist gives emotion, lets her body movements convey a defeated emotion and looks beautiful throughout.
If the music video was not enough to satify fans, Gordon has also released the track's parent EP. Five Needle. Featuring standout tracks such as "World On Fire" and "Against The Time", the project continues to prove why the artist deserve more recognition for her beautiful, meaningful work.
