Stuff We Buy Ourselves: The Jeans Our Editors Wear - New York Magazine Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:18 AM PDT ![]() Photo: Courtesy of retailers If you follow our monthly Strategist Haul, you're familiar with the idiosyncrasies of our editors' and writers' shopping habits. While we think of those as the highlights, there are plenty of other, less glamorous things we buy — and love — on the regular too. So whether you've wondered about the work bags we tote around or the underwear we're most loyal to, this is the Stuff We Buy Ourselves. In this edition, the jeans our editors swear by. Alexis Swerdloff, Strategist editorI'm a parody of a Strategist editor — so sue me! — but these Everlane jeans are my go-tos. Post-baby, my goal was to find a pair of stretchy high-waisted jeans that would keep things "tight" without digging into my stomach, and these do just that. I find them to be the most comfortable high-waisted jeans I've ever encountered, and the faded black wash feels somewhat authentic. Everlane Authentic Stretch High-Rise Skinny I'm a parody of a Strategist editor — so sue me! — but these Everlane jeans are my go-tos. I find them to be the most comfortable high-waisted jeans I've ever encountered, and the faded black wash feels somewhat authentic. Acne Studios River Mid Blue Acne Studios River Tapered Stretch-Denim Jeans I've been buying my jeans from Acne for about a decade. Even as some trendier guys have moved toward looser-cut pants, I'm still a fan of a tapered, skinnier silhouette. The River is Acne's current iteration of said silhouette, evolving from previous versions called the Town and the Roc, which I also own (all told, I have four pairs in my current rotation, and I've worn at least another four to death over the years). The cut is slim, but not cling-to-your-legs skinny, with a higher waist. I like the higher waist because even my smaller tees are easy to wear untucked without showing any skin; I also think it makes tucked-in shirts look nicer, too, because it swallows more fabric. Depending on the denim and the wash, the price can vary, and these are admittedly never cheap, no matter the style. But I wear jeans a lot (probably four to five days a week), and Acne's generally last for years. I bought one of the pairs in my current rotation back in 2016 and it still looks as good as the newer ones, though it feels a bit lighter, like I've been wearing it regularly for the past three years. Maxine Builder, managing editorI have different jeans for different occasions, though all of them are high-waisted. My go-to, everyday jeans are these slightly cropped Levi's Wedgies. They make my butt look good, and they're comfortable and easy to throw on. My black jeans are Levi's 501s, which are the skinniest jeans I wear these days, so I appreciate that they have a little bit of stretch. I also like that the color is called "Black Heart," because that is exactly how black I want my black Levi's to be. I have 20-something pairs of jeans, and picking a favorite feels like being asked to choose a favorite pet; however, I probably wear these Madewell ones the most. They're extra comfy yet don't look sloppy. I'm one of those people who lounge in jeans (yes, instead of sweatpants I relax in denim), and these are perfect for that. Even though they're made of rigid denim, which admittedly doesn't sound pleasant, the relaxed fit makes them comfortable, while said rigid denim ensures they won't stretch out too much. Trust me, I'd never lounge in skinny jeans. Trust me, I'd never lounge in skinny jeans. I'm always on the hunt for a good pair of vintage Levi's (who isn't?), but my most reliable jeans are these Stella McCartney ones that I found at Barneys' big summer sale a couple years ago — I think I paid $25 for them, which felt like an accomplishment. They're in a vibrant, 1970s-ish blue and have straight legs that aren't clingy, despite the 2 percent elastane content in the fabric. The fit actually reminds me of vintage jeans, but the tiny bit of stretch makes them more comfortable for sitting, and the rise is somewhere between mid and high, which is ideal for tucking in a button-down shirt or a turtleneck in the fall. I don't have a strategy for buying jeans. I kind of just haphazardly try things on. So I end up with a lot of jeans that I don't love. But every once in a while I discover a pair that really work. These black jeans from Topshop are my current favorite. They're an upgrade from my Madewell skinny jeans (which now feel too skinny), and despite having a straight fit, the Topshop pair is slightly tapered, not baggy. The best thing about these jeans is how they curve in at the waist. I'm five-seven and either wear a size 28 or 29, and these hit me right at the ankles — a length that works well for all kinds of shoes and boots. Plus, the material is kind of thin and stretchy but doesn't get slack after a few wears. There's a pair of them in blue on sale at Nordstrom right now that I might buy because I like the fit so much. For these, however, I did have a plan. I went to the Everlane store in Nolita to try them on after reading about how much Everlane super-shoppers like them and seeing them on several co-workers. I definitely don't think of them as "cool" jeans, more like basic work-appropriate denim that's also extremely comfortable and flattering. Again, I like that the waist actually hits me at my waist and curves in, so I never get that little gap in the back. I also love the length. I don't think I will ever look like a movie star does in jeans (my ultimate denim dream has always been to look like Geena Davis or Susan Sarandon in Thelma & Louise), but I do feel like these Everlane jeans give me confidence and make me feel put-together. I'm a little embarrassed to put jeans this expensive on here and to have people know about this part of my life. Blue in Green is probably my favorite store in New York City, and it specializes in Japanese denim. I buy one pair there every three or so years, and I probably go to the store ten times between each pair to annoy everyone there and try on a bunch of things and pretend I know stuff about denim. (They could not be more patient and helpful, for the record.) I bought these last week. It was kind of a weird time to buy them because it's the middle of summer, but I like knowing I have them ready to go when temperatures cool down. They're based on a Levi's 501 fit, and I like how simple they are; they don't necessarily call attention to the fact that they cost way too much. Again, they're really expensive, but I plan to have them for many years, and very few things can come close to this degree of quality, so I feel okay about it. Since the 501 fit is basically what I've always looked for in a pair of jeans, last year I bit the bullet and went directly to the source, scooping up four different pairs. Aside from the fit, I like them for their strong hardware and because they're 100 percent cotton (I really don't like "stretch denim" because I find it doesn't age well and feels kind of nasty after a while). I bought my pairs back when Levi's was still making its "Premium" jeans with denim from a supplier called Cone Mills White Oak Plant, which I believe has since closed down. (It was one of the last remaining American denim manufacturers, and it supplied Levi's and a bunch of other more expensive denim lines — Liza sometimes calls me a "heritage bro," and I am fine with that). But even though Cone Mills is apparently no longer supplying the denim, looking at these jeans and mine, I doubt anyone (except for maybe a heritage bro like me) would know the difference. I love the clean, elongating look of black skinny jeans, and this pair from Topshop is perfect. Since they're simple and streamlined, I can pair them with pretty much anything. They're fitted (while still being stretchy and comfortable), and there's no weird gaping anywhere. Plus, because they come in a petite length, I don't have to get them hemmed (which is usually the case, as I'm 4'11"). About a year ago, I read that stylist Stevie Dance (a devout Levi's wearer) had started her own line of jeans with just one style. I was looking to experiment with slightly longer jeans again (I am a little fatigued by cropped pants), so I ordered the "tall" version. The fit is heavily inspired by 501s, of which I (like David) have many pairs. Like vintage jeans, they also have no stretchiness; they are sturdy yet soft. And after a few wears, they literally molded onto my body. Now I need them in black. I copied my friend Eva, who (in my opinion) is the jean queen. My ass doesn't look quite as good as hers does in them, but she is royalty after all. They've got a high-rise straight leg with a crop (which, on my 5'2" frame, just grazes my ankles) and just the right amount of stretch (they're 99 percent cotton, 1 percent elastane). Plus, they more than fit the bill for '90s-style denim, appetites for which show no sign of slowing down. They're pretty basic (and I don't normally like a raw hem), but I practically lived in these Madewell jeans when I first got them. I love the slightly flared leg and high, button-fly waist. They're stretchy and comfortable and just so easy. Plus, they look great with an ankle boot. A good pair of jeans in my book means a no-gap waist — without any alterations or a belt — but I only found a pair that actually follows this rule (on me, at least) earlier this year. As I wrote in my June Strat Haul, the Levi's Mile High Super Skinny Jeans are probably the closest I'll ever get to love at first sight. Not only do they show no gaps at the waist, they stretch just enough to get over my hips without being a full-blown jegging, while still giving me that rigid denim feel. Now that I've gotten a couple months of wear out of them, I can say the fit is not fleeting. After several washes, the waist is as tight as the day I bought them, and the color is still black as night. I'm sure a similar fit exists elsewhere, but at this price point I'll definitely be a returning customer. Topshop Jamie High Waist Flare Leg Jeans Topshop Joni High Waist Jeans Before I discovered the aforementioned Levi's, I was preaching the good word about Topshop jeans. In my experience, the stretchier the denim, the shorter the life expectancy, but my jeans from Topshop have lasted much longer than I ever expected them to. I have a pair of the Joni skinny jeans and the Jamie flare jeans. The Jamie's are made from Topshop's "power stretch denim," which is a bit thicker, but the Joni's are made from its "super stretch denim," which fits more like a second skin. Both have outlasted another, more rigid pair of Topshop jeans I owned, and I think that speaks volumes. Dominique Pariso, writerI — like Jenna and Liza and Karen — want to take a moment to praise Topshop jeans. I'm also a Jamie loyalist; as much as I'd one day love to find the perfect pair of vintage jeans, my hips require a little bit of stretch. I consider these to be my trusty going-out-dancing jeans: They hug every curve but are still comfortable enough to move in. My jeans collection mostly consists of vintage Levi's from college, which is why my newly purchased off-white Eckhaus Latta's have been so revelatory. They're not too high, not too low, not too stretchy, not too wide, not too narrow, have a cool visible seam, fit me like a glove, and make me feel like a Grown-up wearing an Outfit. Perfect pants. These $34 Jeans Fit Perfectly, Have History—and Did We Mention They Cost $34? - Esquire Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:08 PM PDT It's more than likely that when you shop for jeans, where the denim came from isn't the first thing that pops into your head. The quality of that denim matters though—and that's directly connected to who makes it. (More on that crucial relationship in a moment.) After that, of course, they've got to fit just how you want them to. And a favorable price tag, whether that's the first or last thing you look at, is a crucial part of the equation. A pair of jeans that checks all three boxes, especially the first, can be hard to come by. Buying jeans can be a shot-in-the-dark, hit-or-miss process (though it's made easier by our handy guide here), so it's not often your in-store and internet grazing lands on a pair that's got a story, a cut that works for everyone, and a price you can't pass up. But I came across just that trifecta when I learned about what Jomers is bringing to the table. Jomers, as a brand, is only six years old. But the denim in a new pair of jeans has some serious history: It comes from Cone Denim's White Oak mill, the iconic, recently shut down North Carolina facility that's been doing it's thing for more than a century. When Jomers CEO Meyer Dagmy heard the end was near, he and his team members booked a flight to buy as much White Oak denim as they could get their hands on. What they've produced are jeans that aren't raw, but are still rugged. They're sturdy, but not stiff, and have a working man's feel to them. White Oak was recently tossed a lifeline by a local investor named Will Dellinger, which is good news for everyone, but the denim source alone isn't what makes these so special. The cultural divide between guys still wearing skinny jeans and those who've embraced the wide-leg revolution is a vast one. But Jomers' narrowest silhouette, the "tailored" fit, finds the bipartisan sweet spot. They're slim enough to keep you looking tall and trim, but not so skinny that they look out-of-synch with the current style moment. Last, but certainly not least: these jeans cost thirty four (34) fucking dollars. When I first heard "White Oak" and "$34," I knew I needed to give these a spin—but I retained skepticism. There had to be a catch. Yet, upon slipping these on and giving them a proper wear test, no catch presented itself. I'm heartened to say really good, $34 jeans do exist—and the fact that they're made from iconic American denim only adds to the feels. |
Levi's Launches Its Made-to-Order Jeans Program In Asia - Sourcing Journal Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:35 AM PDT Tokyo has a new denim destination. Levi's announced last week the opening of its Tokyo flagship store, complete with a full-service Tailor Shop and the brand's Lot No. 1 program with master tailor Mio Yamamoto. It is the first time that the Lot No. 1 program is available in Asia. The program gives consumers the opportunity to connect with a Levi's master tailor for a custom, handmade pair of Levi's jeans. From consultation and measurement to final fitting, the entire process takes around 16 hours. The program is available in only five other stores in the world. The store will also offer Levi's premium collections, including Levi's Vintage Clothing, Levi's Made & Crafted, Levi's Authorized Vintage, Made in Japan and Iconic 501 jeans. "For many people in Japan, jeans are more than just blue casual pants. We often hear of denim lovers in Japan wanting to buy jeans with a story, something they can connect with," said Chip Bergh, Levi's Strauss & Co. president and CEO. "Our direct-to-consumer and global marketplace strategy continues to pay off as we continue to invest in truly unique consumer experiences that emphasize customization, denim leadership, originality and the authenticity that only Levi's can claim." The three-level, 7,000-square-foot store sits in the epicenter of fashion in Toyko's Harajuku neighborhood, an area known for its youth culture and fashion influences. With details like glass indigo prints on the facade, the store incorporates the surrounding area into its décor and will host performances by local artists and in-store pop-ups. While the Lot No. 1 program offers a traditional approach to customization, Levi's recently announced the launch of Future Finish, a new online platform that allows consumers to personalize their jeans through laser technology. The platform allows consumers to select tints, prints and other fashion details. |
The 15 Best Travel Jeans - Bustle Posted: 07 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT ![]() When you're shopping for the best travel jeans, the goal is finding a lightweight jean that has plenty of stretch. Whether you're lounging on an airplane or sitting in the backseat for a four-hour car ride, you'll be much happier if you're wearing pants that move with you. And, as far as packing goes, lightweight jeans are easier to fit into a suitcase or overnight bag, and won't weigh down your luggage. But, since there are a lot of jeans that fit that description, consider your personal style. Which jeans do you reach for in your closet? Do you like how skinny jeans hug your frame or would you rather be traveling in a looser-fit boyfriend jean? Whether you gravitate toward lighter, medium, or darker denim, there are plenty of pairs below that you'll love. And, if you're prone to spilling your soda the second the flight attendant hands it to you (or is this just me?), maybe opt for a black jean that won't show a single stain while you're en route. Ultimately, the best travel jeans for you will be the pair you're excited to wear even when you're not on-the-go. Queue the fashion-show movie montage! Keep scrolling, the best travel jeans are gathered up, below. The Best Skinny Jeans For TravelClassic skinny jeans are popular for a reason, and they are usually made with a spandex blend that hugs your body closely. This makes them super comfortable and stretchy. And, since skinny jeans taper at the bottom, there's less material taking up space in your suitcase. 1. Levi's Women's 721 High Rise Skinny JeansThese lightweight high-rise jeans from Levi's are made with a blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex, so they'll fit snuggly but comfortably. That means you won't have to worry about them sliding down as you wear them. Better yet? These are machine-washable, so you can easily wash your travel adventures off of them after the day is through. They come in 12 color options ranging from white, to black, to distressed blue. What fans say: "I purchased a pair of jeans because I needed something slightly heavier than leggings yet "almost as comfy" for travel. I was not expecting to like them enough to purchase two more... but I do and I intend to. They are indeed just as comfortable. The color and fit are what I hoped for." Available in sizes: 24 - 34 (short, regular, and long) 2. LEE Women's Rebound Skinny Leg JeanMade with a blend of cotton, polyester, viscose, and spandex, these skinny jeans have plenty of give, but won't get baggy if you wear them for long stretches of time. The high-rise fit will help keep the jeans from slipping down. While they're pictured here in a darker, medium blue, you can actually get them in eight different colors, including grey, a utility green, and a deep purple. What fans say: "This is my second pair. I love these jeans. They are extremely comfortable and fit wonderful. Several compliments on they way they look. I will be ordering more." Available in sizes: 16W-30W (petite, medium, and long) 3. Daily Ritual Women's Mid-Rise Skinny JeanThese light-wash skinny jeans have just enough stretch that you can move freely when you're out and about. But, due to their cotton, elastane, and polyester blend, they won't loose shape with repeated wear. For the price, fans are quick to call this pair the best they've ever owned. They come in eight colors, including five different shades of blue, and a few neutral greys and blacks. What fans say: "These are my favorite pair of jeans. I love how comfortable they are with a little stretch to the fabric and the mid-rise waist. I have long, thin legs so the cut on these jeans fits me just right. They are also the right length which isn't always the case for me. I have worn them every week for a couple months now and they are still in excellent condition." Available in sizes: 24 - 32 (short, regular, and long) 4. Celebrity Pink Infinite Stretch Mid-Rise Skinny JeanThese mid-rise skinny jeans are made with a slightly different blend than others on this list. They have more polyester and rayon and less cotton, so they'll be a bit more durable in the long run but not quite as soft to the touch. They also have enough spandex to stretch when you need them to, and they have four real pockets. You can get them in one of three blue shades. What fans say: "I am blown away with how comfy these pants are! These are so fashionable and comfortable! I'm buying 2 extra pairs as we speak. It's always a gamble buying clothes, let alone pants, online, but I'm thoroughly impressed!" Available in sizes: 14W - 24W The Best Jeggings For TravelIf you're looking for the most stretch and give, you might be better off with a pair of denim-like jeggings. They'll give you the best of both worlds: the look of a denim jean with the stretch of your favorite pair of leggings. A win, win for travelers. 5. WallFlower High-Rise Irresistible Denim JeggingWhile not a true "jean," these jeggings are really comfortable, lightweight, and easy to pack. They have five pockets (three in the front and two in the back), so you'll have plenty of room to store room keys, slim wallets, or any other travel essentials. These high-rise skinny jeggings come in four different colors. What fans say: "[I] wasn't sure about these pants, but when I received them and tried them on, I really didn't want to take them off again! [T]hey fit well, the material is light but still denim-like... I love them!" Available in sizes: 14 Plus - 24 Plus (regular and long lengths) 6. No nonsense Women's Denim Leggings With PocketsRecommended by experts and fans, these medium-rise jeggings are a popular pair amongst travelers. Not only are they stretchy, but they have gold stitching that makes them resemble classic jeans. Made with a blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex, these jeans are durable and can be washed in your washing machine. The also come in black, white, and the dark denim color pictured above. What fans say: "These have held up nicely, some wear is showing, but I used them often while traveling. They were super comfortable traveling and I wasn't wrestling them to stay up like some pants." Available in sizes: Small - XX-Large 7. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. Gold Label Pull-on Skinny JeansThese dark-wash jeggings are unlike most on this list: They're pull on jeggings that don't need to be buttoned or fastened closed. While this waistband distances them even more from the classic jean design, it can come in handy when traveling. They have the look of a pair of jeans but the ease of a pair of sweatpants, so you can easily navigate to your travel destination without worrying about a button or a zipper breaking. Like most of the options on this list, these are made with cotton, polyester, and spandex. But, unlike others, they're hand wash only, so you'll have to put a little bit more effort into washing them. That being said, travelers still sing their praises. What fans say: "I bought these as a comfy yet stylish pair of pants for traveling around Europe and they were AMAZING. So much softer than Pajama Jeans and they fit beautifully." Available in sizes: The Best Straight-Leg Jeans For TravelA straight-leg pair of jeans can be a great option for travelers. For one, they're often made with a relaxed-fit design that allows you to move freely and comfortably even if you're on-the-go. They won't fit quite as snuggly as a skinny jean, but that can work to your advantage if you're traveling somewhere warm and want some breathing room. 8. LEE Women's Relaxed Fit Monroe Straight Leg JeanThese straight-leg jeans by Lee come with the backing of thousands of fans on Amazon. Made with a cotton and spandex blend for extra stretch, these jeans are some of the comfiest you can buy. They fit somewhere in between a mid-rise and high-rise jean depending on your torso. NYDJ Women's Marilyn Straight Leg Denim JeansIn a lighter wash, these NYDJ jeans are a bit more expensive, but worth every penny. The cotton, polyester, and spandex fabric is comfortable and durable, perfect for any travel plans you have. They're also designed to hug your curves without restricting you while you move. Machine-washable, these jeans couldn't be easier to launder. This pair is available in over 30 different color options as well, so you can find the perfect pair for you. One thing to note: Unlike other pairs on this list, they are only available in one length. What fans say: "These jeans are pricey and I have never spent so much on a pair of pants; however they came high recommended so I splurged. I wanted a jean that was flattering and good for traveling. These were both! Little bit of spandex keeps the jeans from being baggy after wearing them for the day. They fit nicely in my suitcase, didn't get too wrinkled and they were comfortable for all the walking I did on our trip. I came home and bought another pair!" Available in sizes: 00 - 18 The Best Boyfriend Jeans For Travel"Boyfriend-style" jeans are a personal favorite of mine. Fit snuggly at the hips but then designed with a looser fit in the legs, these jeans won't slip down with repeated wear or restrict your legs when you move. Look for a pair with spandex or elastane in their fabric and you'll get a comfortable stretch perfect for travelers. 11. Resfeber Women's Boyfriend JeansThese ripped boyfriend jeans are a fan-favorite on Amazon, and come in a bunch of different washes you can choose from. They're mid-rise, so they won't give you quite as much coverage as other jeans on this list. But, most importantly they are stretchy enough to wear if you have a day of activity ahead of you. And, if the ripped look isn't for you, these jeans are available in other washes that don't have any tears in them. What fans say: "These jeans are incredibly comfortable!!! They're a must have for weekend jeans I sized up after reading reviews and shouldn't have. I actually should buy my regular size or a size down... They also seem like they'll stretch out a bit as you wear them so don't freak out if they're tight — they'll grow! I even think they'd grow after doing a couple squats in them." Available in sizes: 0 - 16 12. Jag Jeans Women's Plus Size Carter Girlfriend JeanThese dark-wash jeans actually fit a little bit closer to a "girlfriend-style" jean than a "boyfriend-style." Which is just to say, these have a slightly more tapered leg and a slightly higher hip than your standard boyfriend jeans. With a few strategic rips on the leg, this pair is a fashionable pick that is great for traveling. Not only do they have that spandex-blend fabric that makes them great for any jet-setter, but they've received glowing reviews from fans on Amazon who call these the most comfortable jeans they've ever owned. While they are on the pricey side, they live up to the hype. You can get this pair in a light wash, dark grey tone, or a lighter/medium wash depending on your preference. What fans say: "Love these jeans! The fit is so comfortable! Even better than the boyfriend jeans I bought two years ago. These are not quite as loose and a bit more "girlfriend." Very happy with this purchase!"
