The song serves as the official second single pulled from the highly-anticipated Future Nostalgia (out April 3).
Built around captivating yet ominous dance production, the artist convinces her partner that they should never settle for ordinary. What they have together is phenomenal. And on “Physical”, with nods to Olivia Newton-John’s timeless classic and all, Lipa plans to take full advantage of their frenzied chemistry.
Even though Lipa pulls inspiration from a variety of other artists and genres – the disco-tinged beats, the homage to Newton-John, a likening to the film Flashdance, the vocal styling a la Eurythmics – she still finds a way to inject her own trademark synth-pop flare into the sexy club banger. “Physical” exudes confidence, passion and fun. It's truly the complete package.
With references to the idea that we are all just living in a complex simulation, Lipa speeds past doubt and hesitation, choosing instead to live life to the fullest. And when that idea is projected onto carnal romance, a night of pleasure knows no boundaries. “All night, I'll riot with you, I know you got my back and you know I got you,” she belts on the infectious chorus. “Lights out, follow the noise, baby, keep on dancing like you ain't got a choice.”
“Physical” maintains the retro-throwback path its two predecessors began to carve out for Lipa’s anticipated new album. However, this third taste excels to greater heights with a dark and ravenous effervescence. Produced by Jason Evigan (Maroon 5, Clean Bandit) and Koz (Madonna, Nicki Minaj), the two give Lipa a slick environment to continue her recent and deserved pop takeover.
And just when we thought our lives were complete with the single release, Ms. Dua Peep unleashes an equally-as-satisfying music video for “Physical”. Simple though complex at the same time, the artist dances the night away with her partner through technicolor landscapes and obstacles. It’s a feast for the eyes that cleverly does not take away from the music experience itself, rather it enhances the joy.
Who needs to go to sleep when we got Dua Lipa out her dropping gems?
